Who is behind Texas Bed Company?
One employee and a dream
My wife, Marla McKinstry, and I were both raised here in Southeast Texas – Nederland and Beaumont, respectively. For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to own my own business. Looking back, I’m sure I was heavily influenced by my father and grandfather, who were both self-employed.
My younger brother, Tyler, just 12 years old at the time, worked for a family friend who owned a mattress store . When Tyler was a senior in high school he convinced us that mattresses would offer a great opportunity. My dream came to fruition in Nov. 1993, when I was 26 and we opened our first store in Nederland. My brother Tyler, who had turned 18, was my only employee. To save money, Tyler and I delivered mattresses after work using my older model Ford Ranger.
Nurturing relationships
In the beginning the store sold only one brand of mattresses, but as the business grew, we added other name brand manufacturers. Texas Bed Co. opened a second location in Beaumont in 1995 and purchased property to move to the current Nederland location on Hwy 365 in 1998. Our business was built upon the premise of always putting the customers’ needs first.
In 2005 Hurricane Rita completely demolished the Beaumont location we had been leasing. What could have been a tragedy for our business became a blessing. We were able to purchase the land and we built a new, larger building where the old location had stood. Marla, my brother Tyler and I have continued to work together to grow the business, recently opening another Beaumont location on Dowlen Road in Jan. 2017.

From our company’s humble beginnings, Texas Bed Company now employs 9 full-time professionals. We are proud of our roots; most of our employees have grown up and raised their families here. Our salespeople have over 50 years of combined experience in the mattress and bedding market. They have been trained by our manufacturers, and are extremely knowledgeable about all our products. We want them to be able to pass that knowledge onto you, our customers, so you can select the best possible mattress for your budget based upon your needs and sleep habits.
Thanks to the loyalty and support of hundreds of customers throughout Southeast Texas, we have grown to become the largest mattress retailer in Southeast Texas. Although times have changed, one thing has remained constant at Texas Bed Co.: our commitment to satisfy you, our customers!
